VIOXX
What is Vioxx?
Vioxx (rofecoxib) is a prescription medicine used to relieve signs and symptoms of arthritis, acute pain in adults, and painful menstrual cycles. Vioxx is manufactured by Merck & Co, a New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company.

Vioxx Risks: In September 2004, Merck removed Vioxx from the market after research data demonstrated that it increased the risk of heart attack, stroke, and developing blood clots. There were earlier studies that demonstrated the association between Vioxx and serious cardiac events but Merck, the manufacturer of Vioxx, disputed the results of those studies.

BEXTRA
What is Bextra?
Bextra is a COX-2 inhibitor, marketed by Pharmacia Corporation and Pfizer Inc. in the United States. The drug is prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis, adult rheumatoid arthritis, and the pain associated with menstrual cramping. Celebrex was the first of Pharmacia's COX-2 inhibitors.

Bextra Risks: The New York Times reported in November, 2004, that the arthritis drug Bextra, made by Pfizer Inc., has shown a high incidence of heart attacks and strokes among patients. According to an American Heart Association study Bextra has been linked to heart attack, stroke, and Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Recent reports show that Bextra may be more likely to cause heart attacks and stroke than Vioxx.

CELEBREX
What is Celebrex?
Celebrex (celecoxib) is a prescription medication used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, acute pain in adults, menstrual cramps, and intestinal polyps in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Celebrex is manufactured by Pfizer, a New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company.

Celebrex Risks: Health concerns have been raised regarding the use of Celebrex. An article published in August, 2001, in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) raised concerns over the possible impact on cardiovascular health. In addition the American Heart Association, the National Stroke Association, and the Arthritis Foundation question whether Celebrex increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Celebrex contains a sulfonamide derivative as one of its components, which are well-known to cause Stevens Johnson syndrome. There have been reported cases of Stevens Johnson syndrome associated with Celebrex, as well as other serious skin reactions.
