Spinal Cord and Brain Injury
The cause of a spinal cord or brain injury is usually some type of trauma, for example, a car or truck collision, gunshot, or fall. Spinal cord injury (SCI) can result in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling. The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of functioning to occur. SCI is very different from back injuries, such as ruptured disks, spinal stenosis, or pinched nerves.
The effects of a brain injury are more wide-ranging and can include anything from personality changes and significant memory loss to dizziness and chronic headaches, disorientation and forgetfulness, inability to sleep, and chronic depression. Categories of brain injury include concussion, brain contusion, bleeding in the brain, or a fractured skull.
